R.C.A.F. Canadair Sabre Jet
This is a simple kitbash of two Hasegawa 1/48th scale F-86F kits into one Canadair Mk. 6 Royal Canadian Air Force Sabre. The fuselage is from the U.S.A.F. F-86F kit while the wing was taken out of the J.S.D.F. F-86F-40 box. A minor conversion of the wing was necessary; the wing tips were shortened and the aileron hinge was scribed out over the tips as well. The cockpit was kept stock with the exception of shoulder harnesses on the ejection seat. Some avionics vents were filled in along the fuselage.

A misconception is that the Golden Hawks Air Demonstration Team flew with gold mirror-like finishes on their airframes. In fact quite the opposite was true. Both the Mk.5 and Mk.6 Sabre’s were covered with matte gold paint. I used Tamiya’s Gold Leaf to replicate an accurate finish. It worked perfectly. Weathering was confined to accentuating the panel lines with thinned black oil paint and some discoloration of the exhaust nozzle.

The decals are from Leading Edge. The decals are top-of-the-line, but the references on the instruction sheets are absolutely superb too. After the decals had dried, I attached the external smoke pipes. I shaped these from solder wire. The tie-down clips were made from thin copper wire. The end result is a very unique Sabre Jet in a wild color scheme with equally eye catching markings.
