102nd Fighter Wing

Massachusetts Air National Guard Legacy Project

 Part 1

--------------------

Here is part 1 of a 3-part article on the 102nd FW Legacy Project I recently completed. Some of the decals were available in commercial form, and some I had to create. All models are 1/48th scale, and will be donated to the unit for display at Otis Air National Guard Base.

P-51
For the P-51, I used Monograms’ P-51D kit. It was a simple and quick build. I made the numbers and letters on the computer and printed them. The green trim is Testors small bottle gloss green.

P-47N
I used the Monogram Pro Modeler P-47N kit and Pro Modeler decals for the P-47N. The light blue cowling, seagull badge decals and painting instructions are incorrect based on references I found. I painted the cowling Insignia Blue, but used the seagull badge as that is all I had. Due to my lack of proper test fitting, one wing was left with a large gap on the upper surface against the fuselage. It took quite a bit of fitting with plastic and putty.

F-94B
Finding a 48th scale kit and decals for the F-94B proved to be a challenge.  Fortunately, I found a Hobbycraft F-94A for sale on the ARC boards by “dann” (thanks dann), and ended up using the Superscale 72nd markings for the seagull badges and white/blue lightning bolt. I used wing-tip tanks from Testors T-33 kit. I made the letters and numbers once again, and had some silvering issues under the homemade decals.

F-86H
The 102nd flew the F-86H variant of the Sabre, and I decided to use ESCI F-86E kit instead of the only available H model kit by Collectaire. Thanks to Darren Roberts, as he sent me 2 copies of the decals from the Collectaire kit that had the green clover leaf markings of the 101st FS, which cannot be found in 48th otherwise.

Part 2 of the project will include the F-84F, F-100D, F-106, T-33 and “old school” F-15A. Part 3 will be a single model article…an F-15 depicting its launch on 11 September 2001 .
