The
F-14 is my favorite plane. I chose the “Vandy-1” scheme for this model
because of the unique gloss black paint scheme and “Playboy” bunny tailfins.
This bird was the last tomcat built and was used as an evaluator jet for VX-9.
It is now the gate guard at NAS Oceana.

This
kit was my submission for the “Gone But Not Forgotten” group build.
I used the Hasegawa F-14D kit with Fightertown decals’ “VX-9
Vampires” sheet and data sheet. Most people are familiar with the
Hasegawa kitty and Fightertown decals. This was my first time
building any Hasegawa kit and first tomcat since the Academy kitty when I
was a teenager. I was very impressed with the detail of this
kit. I found much of the “fear” some modelers have of this kit
was over exaggerated. This kit does have a lot of parts and a
few fit issues, but very doable for an average modeler.
This
was my first kit painted with an airbrush. It took some time to learn how
to use, but I have gotten much better. I did some scratch building on the
landing gear and ejection seats using thin gauge wire. I used
Promodeler wash to weather my model. My favorite part of this model was
how well the CATM-9 turned out.
