I just received the latest X-15
release from Special Hobby and thought I would pass along a quick review.
This version of the X-15 is to build the early XLR11 variant.
It does not come with any parts to do the standard XLR99 variant. The kit has
its good and bad points just like previous releases. Most of the sprues are the
same as the X-15A-2 kits which means some minor corrections will need to
be made to the forward fuselage such as filling in the skylight hatch.

Special Hobby made no
attempt to correct the issues that were part of the earlier releases so
you should download a copy of the corrected instruction sheets to help
save yourself a lot of time and frustration. The printable version
of the updated instructions can be found here:

a smaller version can be found here:

Also the horizontal stabs are still too small and will have
to be corrected or if you're lucky, you can try and locate a set of the
corrected stabs that were done by the now-defunt Meteor Productions.
Other recommended parts would be the cockpit and landing gear sets done by
Super Bug Models and available through Great Models. The painting guides
and line art show the aircraft with the larger
ventral fin and the parts are supplied to do that, but the instructions
make no mention of it. The instructions also show the option of adding the
left canopy window cover which was only used on
the later flights of the A-2.
With this version you
do get the ground handling dolly, nose probe, bug-eye camera covers and the
XLR11 engine nozzles and vents. The decal sheet comes with plenty of options and
appears to be much more accurate with brighter and more opaque whites than the
decals supplied with the earlier X-15A-2 releases. They even supply decals with
the ventral fin mission markings. Attached are a few pics of the sprues and
decals. Like the earlier releases this will need a decent amount of work, but
should build up to an impressive model.
